چکیده

Abstract. The Totten and Moscow University glaciers, located in East Antarctica, contain 5.1 m sea-level equivalent of ice have been losing mass over recent decades. Using ICESat-2 laser altimetry repeat track analysis satellite radar interferometry from Sentinel-1a/b synthetic aperture (SAR) images, we mapped the grounding line (GL) locations these two glaciers between 2017 2021. By comparing 2017–2021 GL measurements with historic GLs, detected pervasive retreats along plains at glacier central trunk Glacier Ice Shelf (TGIS) (MUIS). retreated 3.51±0.49 km TGIS, while it 13.85±0.08 MUIS 1996. CryoSat-2 altimetry, found that observed are coincident high thinning rates, addition to velocities, indicating a loss pattern dominated by dynamics. We also identified tide-modulated ocean channels on Eastern (TGEIS) Western (MUWIS), where channel widths highly correlated differential tidal amplitudes. opening MUWIS connects previously separated TGIS systems, which might open pathway for warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water enter main cavity facilitate further retreat.

Impact of ocean forcing on the Aurora Basin in the 21st and 22nd centuries

The grounded ice in the Totten and Dalton glaciers is an essential component of the buttressing for the marine-based Aurora basin, and hence their stability is important to the future rate of mass loss from East Antarctica. Totten and Vanderford glaciers are joined by a deep east-west running subglacial trench between the continental ice sheet and Law Dome, while a shallower trench links the To...

Changes in ice dynamics and mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The concept that the Antarctic ice sheet changes with eternal slowness has been challenged by recent observations from satellites. Pronounced regional warming in the Antarctic Peninsula triggered ice shelf collapse, which led to a 10-fold increase in glacier flow and rapid ice sheet retreat. This chain of events illustrated the vulnerability of ice shelves to climate warming and their buffering...

Wind causes Totten Ice Shelf melt and acceleration

Totten Glacier in East Antarctica has the potential to raise global sea level by at least 3.5 m, but its sensitivity to climate change has not been well understood. The glacier is coupled to the ocean by the Totten Ice Shelf, which has exhibited variable speed, thickness, and grounding line position in recent years. To understand the drivers of this interannual variability, we compare ice veloc...

Observed thinning of Totten Glacier is linked to coastal polynya variability.

Analysis of ICESat-1 data (2003-2008) shows significant surface lowering of Totten Glacier, the glacier discharging the largest volume of ice in East Antarctica, and less change on nearby Moscow University Glacier. After accounting for firn compaction anomalies, the thinning appears to coincide with fast-flowing ice indicating a dynamical origin. Here, to elucidate these observations, we apply ...

Rapid submarine ice melting in the grounding zones of ice shelves in West Antarctica

Enhanced submarine ice-shelf melting strongly controls ice loss in the Amundsen Sea embayment (ASE) of West Antarctica, but its magnitude is not well known in the critical grounding zones of the ASE's major glaciers. Here we directly quantify bottom ice losses along tens of kilometres with airborne radar sounding of the Dotson and Crosson ice shelves, which buttress the rapidly changing Smith, ...
